A Roman State Of Mind . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Thursday, December 21, 2006

Someone recently asked me: If you could live in any time period past or present which one would it be?

An interesting question. I gave it some thought (roughly 5 minutes or so) and decided that I would be a Roman during the height of their empire. The reasons were surface-level and quite hedonistic. I felt no need to get high-minded or philosophical when all I wanted to do was:

A) Wear a toga around day and night

B) Enjoy feasts all the time where the food and drink were plentiful

C) Partake in the decadent orgies to work off the food and drink
D) Soak my fevered flesh in the public/private baths all over the city

I would leave the diddling of young boys and the intense vomiting to others as I could look past these things to find my own path among the Romans.

That sounds like a pretty good life on a dreary day in Austin.

  2. "diddling young boys and intense vomiting"? sounds kinda like the era we live in now, if you ask me. I could definitely go for the bath thing. Lord knows I use the heck outta my hot tub!

  3. Jlee - It's funny how things tend to by cylical, eh? And I always say that more baths is a good thing no matter what time period and I would definitely throw hot tubs into that mix as well.

  5. I would pick England during the early reign of the Normans (>1066ad).
The Doomsday Book, Bayeaux Tapestry and all that wonderful stuff. The art from that period is really interesting.

  7. Interesting...i think i would choose poodle skirts, drive in's and disco's....the 50's.

  8. Slopmaster - Good point. I might arouse suspicion that way, and I could see how you could make a strong argument for the 60s.

Whatigot - I don't know much about that period outside of the Doomsday book, which is sharp. If I was thinking more about finding a time period for art I think I would have chosen differently.

Miss Ash - What is it about women and a love of poodle skirts? Ha. I think that would probably work for you, but I think I might feel a bit stymied in the 50s. Just maybe. But I've heard other women say similar things.

  10. Can I just point out that the couple in the toga pic look extremely nerdy?

  12. I'd want to be a Medici at the height of the Renaissance. To actually witness the birth of such brilliance. And dear god the jewelry!

  13. Jlee - They do look like complete tools. I think I found this picture on a costume rental site - an it looks like it. They're not real Romans.

Melissa - That's a good answer as I was mulling something in the Renaissance as well. This was mostly due to the fact that I would like to refer to myself as a Renaissance Man, but I'm sure there are other reasons that you pointed out.

  17. Hey i'd go for the Rome days myself, although, I would have specific wishes like being a queen or something and get fed grapes while soaking in a bath by my many slaves. That's all, nothing much really :D

  19. I meant getting fed grapes by my many slaves, not soaking in the bath with them! I'd soak with a king.

  22. Starbender - Thanks, and have a great holiday and New Year yourself. Here's to an even better 2007 for everyone.

Carmel - You're exactly right about the grapes as that crossed my mind too (different genders feeding them, but still . . . ). Same thing with the royalty soaking too. Ha.

Steff - I think being royalty would be a definite plus (unless you were beheaded like Marie Antoinette). Happy New Year to you.
