Thoughts on "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Monday, November 03, 2008

Worth Full-Price, Matinee or Rental: Matinee. Unless you have a burning desire to see it because the word 'porno' is in the title, then a matinee would suffice. And if the word porn gets you going that much, then you might as well apply that $9.50 towards an actual adult movie.

Will I Own It On DVD: Possibly. If it drops below $10 at Best Buy, then I might pick it up one day.

1) "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" is a wonderful title that sums up the film quite well. It tells the story of platonic best friends - Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks - who live together and then one day turn to making a porno film when they run of money to pay their rent/heating/water bills. This happens every day I suppose.

2) This movie does not serve as a particularly good date movie unless you are dead-certain about the female who might accompany you for a consistently vulgar ride filled with rampant nudity, strong profanity and a bit of pure sexual filthiness to round things out.

3) Luckily, 'Zack and Miri' also has a small, but sweet side as the cast helps elevate the material into an enjoyable package (pun intended). Banks turns in an extremely winning performance that grounds the movie into some sense of reality and reasonable behavior, however, the entire cast is strong.

The ensemble works well together, and allows you to believe that they truly enjoy being with each other and have found a rallying goal in making this porno. Craig Robinson (Darryl from TV's "The Office) and frequent Smith collaborator Jason Mewes are particularly amusing, and Brandon Routh ("Superman") and Justin Long (Mac commercials) have a funny cameo as a gay couple at the high school reunion.

4) I enjoy Seth Rogen. I find him to be likable and a funny guy, however, he's starting to grind away at the same character over and over again. There is certainly a place for a profane slacker with a tender side, but when that is the character description nearly every time you are cast, then it becomes very ordinary. On the plus side, he wasn't smoking pot this time, so I guess that counts as a bit of a departure.

5) In the Kevin Smith filmography, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" is a fine addition that is far closer return to form then "Clerks 2." It doesn't rival "Clerks" or "Chasing Amy" for Smith's best work, but if you're looking for a winning cast and a film that is summed up in the title, then you could do far worse than spending time with Zack and Miri.

  2. At least Traci Lords FINALLY got a big screen gig, although not exactly what she was hoping for, I'm sure.

  4. I'm kind of hit and miss with Smith's movies, but I might catch this next weekend as I can appreciate an "enjoyable package" every now and then. ha
I always find that guy Robinson from "The Office" really funny for some reason, but I agree about Rogen. They always beat the same character into the ground when it works.

  5. Heff - Yep, and she is starting to look a little rough, yet she still has a fine charisma . . . Ha.

Jlee - Robinson is definitely funny in this one and on that show. It's a pretty funny cast, so if you go in with low expectations & a matinee price, then you'll get some laughs. And some porno. Ha.

  6. I almost went to it this weekend, then decided that I don't even want to pay matinee price for this one. I'll just wait until it's playing on HBO thirty times a week.

  8. I was hoping you'd review this one - it's on the List - mostly because Clerks is one of my favorites of this genre. After reading this, I'll keep it on the list. That said, Seth Rogan should be careful about his next role... otherwise he could find himself going "full retard" in a vain attempt to break out of this mold.

  9. Native Minnow - That's just fine too . . . it won't suffer at all moving to the small screen & the price is definitely right.

A.B. - Ha. I was thinking about Downey's speech from 'Thunder' and almost cited in the when talking about Rogen. Seriously. Ha. And I have an autographed DVD of 'Clerks' that I got for Xmas from my Dad several years ago. Great movie. This one is solid and has some laughs.

  11. I haven't been able to decide about this one. Really love Kevin Smith. Really don't love Seth Rogan. Thanks for the help. I'll put it in the queue once it's out on dvd ~ and on a weekend we *don't* have Timber with us. ;)

  17. This one doesn't interest me so much....but I do want to see that movie about community service!

  19. Thanks for this review. I couldn't get to the theater this weekend, hopefully soon. Glad to hear that the performances are good, as the plot seems pretty straightforward. Your review helps me decide that I'll see RocknRolla first, then spend a little time with Zach and Miri.

  20. Bostonpobble - Glad I could help a little bit, but you are in a quandry (sp?) if you like Smith and not Rogen with this one. I still say you catch it some night on a rental and definitely sans children. Ha.

Al Gore - That's a lie and you know it. I'm sick of these unfounded claims dammit.

    A.B. - Neither of them did it . . . I promise.

Miss Ash - What movie are you talking about? Oh yeah, I blanked, but I think you're talking about 'Role Models.' THe concept of that is very sitcom-y, however, Rudd and Scott are elevating it from the few trailers I've seen.

Linda - Glad to have helped with your prioritizing a little bit. I'm excited to see 'RocknRolla' so I'll watch for your review. I might see this coming weekend.

  24. There's an important vote to cast at my place today too!

  26. I find Kevin Smith SO overrated. he is his funniest when doing lectures. But his films are overrated imho. And I think Seth Rogen is funny but he ends up with women in films who in the real world would never go out with him let alone sleep with him, even with beer goggles on!

  27. Troll - I made it.

A.B. - I came over during the election coverage last night, however, I had already early voted, so Paco didn't make it - this time. And if I can, I will try for the office pic, but my VP is in town and things are soemwhat hairy.

Vivavavoom - I agree about Rogen (and to Smith to a lesser degree) as I was thinking the other day just how many great-looking women he has been sleeping with onscreen. Lucky guy.
