Password Crazy . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Wednesday, April 22, 2009

I’m currently on hold with my credit card company because I need them to give me a password which I gave to them a long time ago.

I need the antiquated password to set up an online account to access my credit activity where I will be forced to enter a different password to actually activate the session. Lately, I feel like I am drowning in passwords. At least half` my brain function seems dedicated to remembering passwords to various accounts.

Off the top of my head, I have passwords for accounts like:

• Hotmail
• Blogger
• American Express
• Mastercard
• ADP Payroll
• Fidelity Investments
• Best Buy Reward Zone
• Netflix
• Gamelink mature films
• Inktip writers shop
• Blue Cross Blue Shield
• Credit Union
• AA Miles
• Amazon.com
• Work computer
• Work Email
• Linkedin
• Nordstrom
• Infiniti cars
• Austin American Statesman

I’m sure there are a host of others, but my brain is tired and I’m sick of remembering passwords. Obviously, many of these overlap, but even more of them differ in minute ways which causes me to tear my hair out because I know I’m close, but the damn account just won’t unlock. This is because each site has its own rules which sometimes require a certain number of characters, upper and lower case letters, numbers and words mapping to particular kinds of fruit found only in South America. Maybe not that last part, but it’s probably coming soon.

I know there are password software programs out there to help with this, but I have yet to look into them. They probably want a password too.

Oh well, an automated voice just told me my wait time is less than two minutes, so I better run and hope that I can obtain my password which will lead me to the next one and ultimately the information that I seek.

  2. Oh I hate that shit!! I had to make a new ABC login for "Dancing with the Stars" voting the other night because I couldn't remember it. lol
I'm like Heff and usually use the same password for everything. I guess I shouldn't have said that out loud. Bring it on, phishers!!

  3. Heff – It’s a constant pain in the ass, and yep, I try to use the same one too but you can only rarely do that these days. Besides, there is probably already a ButtFUCK1 on some sites, so then you’d have to be ButtFUCK2 and you’d forget you didn’t arrive first the next time you tried to sign in. Ha.

Jlee – You better believe it. But that sounds like too much trouble to go through to vote on DWTS . . . Ha. And yes, agreeing with Heff about that particular subject needs clarification unless that your password too. :) Let’s hope the Phisers stay far away from us all, eh?

  5. You have my complete sympathy. I can't get into photobucket or flickr for similar reasons. I had the passwords but when they changed over to Yahoo......can't remember the yahoo id.
    Rats.
    Cheers

  7. hee hee...I agree. I am an idiot and have kept the same 2 for everything. so a hacker can milk me if they ever guess I guess. But they are bizarre so good luck. always loved the people who thought 'password' was a clever password. big mistake they say.

  8. Maddy – Thanks and I think I too have/had a Flickr account once upon a time, but couldn’t remember the password now if you paid me. Ha.

Vivavavoom – That is not a clever password as I have heard about that as well. I have 2 “go-to” passwords as well, but the deviations with numerals, capitalization, etc. would hopefully keep someone people at bay if they were cracked. Let’s hope we both never find out.

  10. The only password I need is that silly gameshow from way back when. If I can't buy it with cash, I don't need it.

And to make passwords more difficult, a lot of online banking institutions are now using that password + answer a question thing. You think I remember why my favourite colour was six months ago. And they're caps sensitive. Get it wrong three times and it locks the account. I end up having to call the bank every effing time I try to login.

I'd rather keep my money hidden in my house somewhere. I would, if I had any.

  12. Mr. Boxer recently showed me where he keeps his PILE of passwords in case anything should ever happen to him. I haven't documented mine, but I've started using the same password on all of my accounts. As I get older, I worry about my ability to remember them ... or MAYBE, it's keeping our brains "young" by having to go through the exercise of committing them to memory?

That said, the other day I could not get into my old AOL account because I couldn't remember my password; "123456".

  16. GACK!

And remember, all this is supposed to make out lives easier! *eye roll*

I am intrigued by "Inktip writers shop" and will have to look it up. Okay, I'm intrigued by a couple others, too, but Inktip is all I'm copping to here.

  18. Ugh I hate passwords!! I'd use the same one over and over again but as you mentioned certain sites need 6 characters, others need letters and numbers others need symbols it's ridiculous. Kissmyass should work just fine, seems like an appropirate amount of letters no?

  19. WIGSF - That's even tougher . . . might be a Canadian thing as I haven't seen it here - yet. I hope now as the password thing is bad enough and as you mentioned, some are case sensitive and others are not and this only sucks all the more. Good luck burying your cash in the backyard moving forward. Ha.

Boxer - I've thought about compiling a list for my wife as well even though it is kind of morbid, which is probably why I have yet to start. Ha. As for memory games, I figure that's a fair point as it can't help but keep the mind sharp. But in the meantime, it's still a daily pain in my ass.

Bostonpobble - It's for screenwriters as they represent work out to studios/producers/other writers/etc. It's a fairly legit site that I just got into a few months ago, so once your book is optioned and you sign to write the screenplay, you can jump on to. Ha. THe other sites you should explore for yourself. :)

Miss Ash - Exactly. And Ha. Kissmyass would be fine, although some would have be all lower case, another would be kissmyass7, etc. It never ends.

  20. BostonPobble Says:
  21. Oh Hell No. Once my book gets optioned as a movie, that's where I contract in that Two Dollars Productions has to write the script because I SUCK at scripts. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

  22. h Says:
  23. Email me your passwords and I'll straigten out this problem for you.

  24. Ugh.

That's all I have to say about that.

  25. Bostonpobble - Don't sell yourself short as you might LOVE writing it yourself, but first, there's these pages I'm sure you're focused on . . . Ha. I am up to 120 pages on my own project, and feeling pretty steady but wish I had more time to dedicate (write in the morning hours . . . )

ChefTroll - I'll keep your part-time security operation in mind if times get desperate & let's hope it doesn't get that ugly, eh? Ha.

Native Minnow - Indeed. There's nothing good about it.
