Lawyers, Guns and Money . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Wednesday, April 08, 2009

After North Carolina won the NCAA tournament on Monday night, their victory was also mine because it meant that I had conquered my bracket and won the whole damn thing, which amounts to a few hundred dollars from a $10 initial investment.

Those kinds of returns are staggering in today’s economic times and make me want to run to Vegas to parlay my luck into greater sums. But of course I won’t despite the fact that Sin City is having a fire sale on rooms and other amenities because of the downturn. The best part of the win was the knowledge that I had beaten a pack of high-powered lawyers, an occurrence which happened through a random set of circumstances that pushed me into their midst as an interloper bent on nothing less than utter victory.

Now, it’s just a matter of collecting the money, and avoiding any fine print they might have conjured up to hide their losses. I scoff at fine print, much like I do at O’Douls, tight-whitey underwear and sports mascots who wear shirts but no pants.

I will collect the money before I leave town for Easter tonight even if it means sacrificing my lunch hour to drive downtown and harangue them before they can dine at the Four Seasons or suck down glazed snapper at McCormick and Schmidts. There will be no power lunches until I am paid what I am owed.

Like Robert De Niro in ‘Heat,’ I don’t really have time to settle this score, but I will make time before driving north with my brother to see family. Between collecting debts and actual work and trying to find something for Quick Hit Friday, time is of the essence and with any luck at all, I can get everything done before 4 p.m. We’ll see.

  4. I'LL BET that THEY leave town before YOU do.

    Good luck collecting, lol.

  5. Jlee - I agree. And I can afford the time to collect. Ha.

Heff - I'll find them. Don't you worry about that . . . Appreciate the luck though as I'll always take it.

  6. Bravo to you friend, on a victory well deserved. UNC played the way I knew they would, but hoped they wouldn't.

The husband and I laughed Monday night, saying that we would like to see UNC play the OKC Thunder. Because we think UNC would win.

Anyhow, have a safe journey to your Easter destination and enjoy the time with your family.

  7. Wow. Good job. I didn't even fill out a bracket this year. I've only placed once, and that was a second place score b/c the other guy won the tiebreaker by picking the total score. It was a winner take all pool, so I still didn't get paid. Boo!

  8. Kmwthay - Thanks as I understand your pull against them, but they were really good this year. NC could probably give OKC a run for their money, although OKC has improved from the opening of their season. Small favors,eh? Have a great Easter yourself.

Native Minnow - This pool was like 70% to the winner, which I now wish was winner-take-all after-the-fact. In general, I think some money for 2nd place is a good thing for sure. Anyway, that would be brutal losing the tie-breaker score as I had to enter one as well in case things were tied. Luckily, they weren't because I was off by quite a bit on that front.

  10. Wow, congratulations! Most folks I know got smoked when Pitt lost, the rest went down w/ UConn. I only listen from the sidelines, though I did fill out brackets for summer box office (surprise, surprise). I have Transformers 2 taking the most $$$$. Good luck collecting the dough and have a happy Easter!

  12. If you want to come out on top in the tourney of self-actualization, you gots to fill your brackets with buttermilk biscuits and stepping-stone goals.

  18. You are the only person I've ever read who can make collecting a debt sound this interesting.

  20. Nice job!!

Where the heck are these deals in Vegas you speak of??? I paid an arm and a leg for my upcoming trip.

  21. Linda - Thanks and I've never seen a summer box office form. Send me a link if you can . . . I wouldn't mind taking a shot at that. Ha. As for 'Transformers 2,' sounds like a solid bet but I can't recall what all is coming out this summer.

Dr. Phil - Thanks Doc - it's that kind of advice that keeps you in business, although I have no idea why. Ha.

Romany Angel - Thank you & I like the word illustrious. Haven't used that in awhile, and need to file it away. Hope you had a good Easter.

Boxer - You better believe it. Ha.

Bostpobble - Thanks Pobble as I take that as an extreme compliment, especially coming from your direction. :) It would be more interesting if I was breaking legs to collect it, eh?

Miss Ash - I think air fare is still relatively high, but for awhile, I was getting all sorts of come-ons for room deals. My advice: stay at the Palazzo. They have great suites & are still new.
