Spring Break Is Backwards . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Monday, March 16, 2009

It’s Spring Break in Austin, which means the college is out, traffic is better and the South by Southwest music/movie festival is kicking into high gear and they can all go screw themselves as far as I'm concerned.

I was thinking over the weekend just how backwards it is that kids get a Spring Break, and adults get the shaft. What exactly do college students need a break from? It must be the brutal 15 hours a week of classes or the indiscriminate sex or the Ramen Noodles or maybe the wearing of backpacks that demands a legislated break from these activities each and every year.

These seems wholly unreasonable to me now that I’ve left college behind and am forced into an office most days. If anything, it’s the workers who should be given a mandatory week-long exodus while students stay behind and learn principles such as fairness, hard work and envy, the last of which will be driven home by Youtube videos showing sunburned adults whopping it up on beaches while students sit inside classrooms lit by fluorescent bulbs and presided over by members of the campus ROTC program, who like nothing better extolling the virtues of discipline.

That’s a world I want to live in . . . Actually, I wouldn’t begrudge students their time off if we simply broadened it out to include more people and groups as the United States has some the most draconian time off polices of any country in the world. My best friend moved to Ireland after college, and he gets 29 days of paid leave each year, which his firm actually expects him to take. Amazing.

Oh well, I’m not one to dwell on other people’s good fortune as the expense of my own, so I guess I will simply get to work and ignore any reports I see concerning Spring Break. Or I might just call in sick and head for the beach.

  2. Perhaps it's because noone is interested in seeing a 50 year old man rolling around in the sand drunk and the same age woman flashing her tatas.

    I miss spring break :(

  4. As someone currently bathing under flourescent lights myself, I feel your pain.

  8. Maybe I'm operating on a different plane, but... I thought Spring Break existed to give those spoiled teachers a week off. The students are just making the most of a bad situation. But I live in the region with the continent's highest paid teachers and most powerful teacher's unions.

  9. Miss Ash - A good point, although if you drink enough I suppose everything looks better. Ha. And yes, for some reason, I actually miss Spring Break whereas I don't usually care that much.

Heff - It is a shared pain from loads of people, and I'd much prefer to be soaking up some sun & jumping in the ocean. Selah.

Chef Troll - Dude. I know. I really don't care to do keg stands, but the week off seems appealing.

WhatIgot - I didn't even consider the teachers in the equation, and had no idea about your particular region where they seem to rule with an Iron Fist. Maybe you should change professions as that sounds like a good gig . . .

  10. It's funny. I have a friend who's in his early thirties, and he still goes to some spring break destination every year. This year I've been told it's Jamaica. Last year he went to Mexico, tried to hit on some girl, got shot down, so made out with her mom, then couldn't figure out why the girl didn't want anything to do with him after that. Yeah, we make fun of him for it. For all of it. What thirty-something year old goes on a "real" spring break vacation?

  12. Amen! I don't remember the kind of stress in college that I have nowadays. I LOVE your idea of letting those poor students come and sit at my desk for a few days while I go out and soak these weary bones. I say this, because it SNOWED here yesterday.

  13. Don't get me wrong. I'll try to go somewhere this spring break, but it will likely just be a long weekend, and certainly won't be anywhere near the college crowds at the typical destinations.

  14. Native Minnow - That sounds like a good friend to have for the stories (as long as that friend is not you, eh?). Ha. I can't really imagine being able to nor wanting to hang with the sophmore college crowd at Spring Break, but I suppose it's somewhat valiant for him to struggle on . . . Maybe.

Boxer - Snow? Jeez. It was actually cold and rainy last week, but the sun is out today and it's 78 degrees, so that is also making me angry that I'm sitting inside. Selah. I'm all for a soak as well - I'll take a hot tub or the ocean or anywhere outside view a view. Whimper.

Native Minnow - You should - it's a moral imperative. If you can do it and it's built into yr. schedule, then take full advantage while you can.

  15. My solution to fluorescent lighting is to turn them off and use a lamp. I don't know if you have that luxury in your office, but I get to in mine. (Actually, the fluorescent bulb is burned out and I won’t let them replace it.)

Woot on adult spring break. I think at the very least the 30somethings of the world deserve a spring break. and a winter break.

  17. We rented Role Models this weekend.... it was a great watch. Thanks for the suggestion/review last week.

  19. I've always felt this way about naptime. When you're in kindergarten, you're forced to take naps even though you don't want them and have enough energy to power a small town. Then, about the time you start appreciating the joys of naptime and it wouldn't have to be mandatory *poof* it's gone. From then on out, if you want one, let alone take one, you're a lazy ass.

Naptime and spring break. I should rule. Seriously.

  20. Kmwthay - That's a good idea on the lamp suggestion, and I've thought about it numerous times yet have done nothing about it. 30somethings Spring Break would be just fine as long as the destinations from high school/college were far enough apart that I didn't feel bad about quitting the nightly activies before sunrise. Ha.

Boxer - Glad you liked it as I thought it was a solid one with some funny lines that popped up enough to keep me interested. I thought they wasted Elizabeth Banks though as I like her quite a bit.

Bostonpobble - You're right about lots of things getting turned backwards as naps are definitely one of them. I got back into naps when I was a personal trainer, and they were utterly fantastic. I miss them even now . . . And if you start running to rule the world on a platform built from naps and Spring Breaks, then you will certainly get some followers. Ha.

  22. at the end of the day, we'll go wherever we can find women.

The oppresive work pace in the US is crazy, but the lazyness of countries without our work ethic can be really scary too. So you take the good with the bad.

  24. our spring breaks are called vacations...and we pay for them! does suck. man, I need a vacation!why does that girl look like she is taking a piss to me?

  25. Slopmaster - I think there's a happy medium between laziness & some time off to enjoy. I'd prefer to find that place versus the current one.

Vivavavoom - I'd take a vacation as well, but unfortunately, adult vacactions are still not nearly as carefree as student Spring Break. Selah. And I had to laugh about that picture because she does look a little like she might burst. Ha.
