Thoughts On "The Simpson's Movie" . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Monday, August 13, 2007

Worth A Matinee or Full-Price Ticket: Matinee. You can justify spending money on a cheaper showing for a product that's free on TV, but not the full freight.

Will I Own It On DVD: Doubtful. I would rather spend money buying seasons of the TV show that were really good.

1) You won't suffer from waiting to rent and watch "The Simpson's Movie" on the small screen, however, if you're going to see it at all, you should view it at the theater because the majority of the fun is the experience of watching something that's been on your TV for years in a giant setting.

2) The movie itself played like a slightly above average (and obviously longer) version of one of the TV shows, which was the best you could hope for in my mind.

3) Despite the appearance of one character's genitalia, the transition away from broadcast rules doesn't mean anybody starts swearing or that you find Simpson's characters in filthy positions.

4) A fair amount of the jokes are based on current events, and that means that they will be instantly dated. That kind of humor doesn't typically hold up well over the years as it is based in a particular time and place.

5) My favorite line in the film was probably from Ned Flanders when he chastised one son with "I wish you didn't have the devil's curly hair." Now that's funny.

All in all, I was glad to have seen The Simpson's on the big screen after watching them off and on for over a decade. If you go for a matinee, and keep your expectations in check, then you won't be too disappointed and everybody needs time out from another summer Threequel anyway.

  2. I loved the movie. I thought it was great. The pig was great. Albert Brooks was his usual funny self. There were so many great lines and some nice Swartzwelderisms.

  3. We were going to see this this weekend while in Chicago -- my boyfriend's a huge fan. But we decided to spend that time together. Maybe we'll see it in early September...if it's still at theater. If not, we'll just wait for the DVD.

  5. I want to see this....every time I say that about a movie I forget to go...and then it's gone from the theatre...Boo Urns.

  6. WhatIgot - I'm glad you enjoyed it as I knew you had high expectations. I liked it, but thought it fell short of the best episodes from TV (but that is a high mountain to climb).

Stephanie - You can definitely wait, but you should check it out on the big screen if it's still around in September. It's semi-interesting to see the same characters transferred from your TV to a giant multiplex.

Miss Ash - You're too young to have this short-term memory thing going. Ha. Make it a point to go see it this coming weekend, cross it off your list of films and you'll feel much better.

  8. I thought it had some really funny moments and it was much better than the Spongebob Movie translation. haha

  10. I tend to agree with your reviews and have waited to see this... I'm going to take your advice and rent the DVD. Yah, I'm lazy.... but efficient. Plus, this is the time of the year when the Studios start "dumping" the rest of their summer movies and I'm looking for a real sleeper.

  11. Jlee - There were some definite laughs, but I'll have to take your opinion on the Spongebob comparison as I have never seen anything to do with that guy. Ha.

Anonymous Boxer - You're dead-on about this being the time of year for Hollywood dumping, but there's usually at least 1 - 2 sleepers that also arise. There's two that I've got my eye on: 1) Superbad - getting strong buzz as a funny film that doesn't require brainpower 2) 2 Days in Paris (or something close) - Small art film directed and starring Julie Delpy. I've read some good things, but don't know when it will open in Austin (if at all). There could definitely be others.

  13. Agree on your two picks. Here's one that caught my eye this morning (for obvious reasons)"Resurrecting the Champ" - Samuel L. Jackson, muthafuckers, Samuel L. and boxing... I'm so there.

  15. I guess I'll be waiting to see this one at the second run theater then.

    Hey, B!
    I got all caught up.
    Have a nice week.

  16. Anonymous Boxer - You must go see that flick - it's a moral imperative. And thanks for the information.

Sherry - Great to see you again, and your brain must be like mush if you caught up on all the high-brow stuff around here lately. But we can hope for a few laughs, eh?

  18. Ssssssss....bloop.....creshhhhhhh.

That's the sound of a shark being jumped.

  19. I loved it!!!!!
I was ready to be disappointed but wasn't in the slightest!

Speaking of funny, have you seen Hot Fuzz yet? Like I told you to?!?! You don't want me to get angry...

  20. J717+ - Is that the sound? I've always liked that expression, and while I don't think this movie did that, it was certainly a fear of mine going into it.

GirlFriday - That sound threatening. Ha. But I saw "Hot Fuzz" awhile ago while getting pretty ripped beforehand. Needless to say I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now smile . . .

  21. Good boy :)

  22. I like to think so.

  24. Thanks for your recommendations on this. I went to a matinee today and was glad I saw it in the theater. Very entertaining.

  25. I'm glad you liked it as I was happy to have seen it on the big screen too.
