Celebrating With Monkeys And Drinks . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Tuesday, June 19, 2007

It's time for a mini-celebration in Austin as I managed to finish the rough draft of my second comedy script, "Monkey Business," early this morning.

This has taken about six months to write, which was probably about a two months longer than necessary as I got deterred by a modeling trip to New York and life its ownself and that combination pushed out the date until now.

Since nearly all pitches involve describing a brand-new script in terms of movies already released, I'll go with "Monkey Business" as:

The bastard lovechild of "Risky Business" and "Old School" with a subtle brush of "Little Children" thrown into the mix (the parts not involving pedophilia). That sounds like a comedy to me.

For now, I plan to let the script sit for two weeks, and then pick it up following the 4th of July for a brutal and savage re-write that should take me until the end of summer.

But that is weeks away, and a great celebratory summer drink that I recently discovered is The Paloma. I highly recommend one this summer as I read about it a few months ago, and also noticed that the recent Playboy named it the "Summer Drink For 2007."

I am nothing if not current in my drinking. So with that in mind, here is how to make one, and as soon as I can finish working for the day, I plan to test out my mixing skills.

The Paloma:

* Chill one large glass in the freezer
* Fill it with ice
* Add two ounces of tequila (I use Cazadores Resposado)
* Squeeze in one large lime
* Add a pinch of salt
* Top off with grapefruit soda (I use Squirt)
* Mix, throw in a hunk of lime and drink

It is easy to make, goes down even easier and causes anyone drinking it to ease up on their morals. Enjoy.

  2. Mixed drinks defeat the purpose of drinking. The purpose, as I see it, is to drink away your problems. Adding steps of complication adds to your problems and decreases your ability to drown your pre-existing problems. I guess what I'm trying to say is: hand me that bottle of old No. 7 and shut up.

  3. You're missing some of the fun with the preparation as it feels like you've accomplished something AND then you get to drink. A sense of accomplishment is always a good thing.

  5. Do you think I could use Vodka? I kinda screwed myself on tequila a few years ago.

  6. Congrats on the screenplay and good luck on the rewrite! Doesn't "paloma" mean "dove" in Spanish? Can you fly after you drink it?

  8. yum!! I'm in!!

  9. Anonymous Boxer - Possibly. But who doesn't have a bad tequila story (I know I do). That being said, it didn't bother me in the Paloma and you need to buy a decent brand to put in it which probably helps too.

Wendy - Thanks as I'm sure you know that it's a good feeling to put it aside (if only briefly). As for the drink, I'm not testing the flight theroy and I hope nobody else does either. Ha.

Nobich - They're pretty damn tasty in my opinion.

  11. Congratulations on the script. Writing is hard. Admiration and respect. You deserve the drink before embarking on the rewrite. Savage and brutal? I don't envy. I've never had the consistent vision to write properly. I'd love to see the draft.

  12. How do you think it would work as a crushed ice mixture?

  13. Getoffmylawn - You've obviously got some bit of it as you blog with great frequency and sometimes with substantial length.
Appreciate the good words, and give me the length of the savage/brutal re-write before it sees the light of day.

Sarcastic - I am a fan of crushed ice, although Sonic has the best kind. So I think you'd be fine with the crushed. Let me know.

  17. I drank 7 too many Tequila Sunrise whilst in Japan one evening. I had to be up at 4am to catch the Shinkansen that day....man that was a brutal morning.

    Good luck with the script!!

  18. Vivavavoom - It is an easy drink to make which suits me very well.

Miss Ash - Ouch. That sounds pretty brutal and I generally loathe tequila for stories just like that one. But I make an exception for the Paloma.

  20. Was 911 called when you had a bad tequila incident?

  22. Woo hoo, have a Paloma for me!! (sounds yummy, you may have given me a new summer refreshment) A finished screenplay is worth celebrating, good luck with the rewrite.

  23. Anonymous Boxer - I surrender. You've got me beat as a long night with the toilet sufficed for me.

Linda - Thanks, and the Paloma is a great summer drink. Trust me - I know.

  25. Congrats on finishing the script. It's been a long, painful birth, eh? That drink sounds awesome...I'll have to give it a try, although Tequila can knock me on my ass too if I'm not careful.

  26. Thanks and I was leery of the Tequila as well, but if you buy something decent (take my recommendation) then it went down smooth.
