The Way I Roll . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Wednesday, May 30, 2007

So we had a company-wide off-site meeting yesterday at a local bowling alley, which meant it was time to dust off my championship form and also listen to an increasingly strained speech given by our CEO concerning how bowling mirrored our business model.

It was every bit as enthralling, and relevant as it sounds.

But I did not walk into this event unprepared as I am a bear for detail. It might have been more than a year since I last rolled a bowling ball, yet I felt undaunted and even cautiously optimistic about the endeavor - if I spent the proper time needed for professional preparation.

And I did.

First, I watched "Kingpin" on DVD.

Next, I watched "The Big Lebowski" on DVD.

Then I felt prepared.

My attention to detail paid off handsomely as I chalked up more strikes than an airline workers union in rolling my way to a cool 176, and willing my team to the overall victory.

In the process, I earned a nice $25 gift card to a local movie theater and an even greater level of respect from my fellow co-workers.

I felt my acceptance speech included the appropriate mix of humble appreciation and healthy confidence as I took the microphone during the presentaton ceremony, and explained that: "I owe our victory to an established history of athletic prowess, a rigid adherence to the company values and two Shiner Bochs. Thank you."

Victory is sweet.

  2. Having worked at a couple of bowling alleys in my lifetime, Kingpin is not just a movie, its a way of life.

  3. I knew you had bowling alley experience, but I had no idea how closely Kingpin mirrored hte real world - until now.

  5. Oh next thing we know you'll have your name embroidered on a bright pink shirt and playing leagues on Tuesday nights, right? haha

  9. Vikings bowl?

  10. You walked around a grocery store at 2am in your jammies?

  11. Jlee - Just de Jesus right? I don't look so good in pink or I might consider it.

Miss Ash - I cannot say I'm an enthusiast per se as I play roughly once every 3 years or so, but I am competitive. And bowling is generally only fun when drinking a little.

Anonymous Boxer - A little known fact - yes they do. A good conversational gambit for your next dinner party. Ha.

Malnurtured Snay - Unfortunately they were out of Half and Half. I have no shame.

  12. Bowling is always fun! I took it in college to get PE credit instead of jogging or aerobics. Didn't give you a gift certificate to get your own bowling shirt?

  14. I love bowling but don't do it enough to be good at it. nice speech, always good to mention the company. now you can see more movies and write reviews on them. I am seeing Shrek 3 with my son tomorrow since school is out for the summer....god help me.

  15. Sarcastic - Bowling shirts can be semi-cool, but I'll take the theater gift certificate as you can eat/drink there as well. Nice one on the college class as I opted for Racquetball, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Vivavavoom - You must suck up somewhere to the company even if there is veiled sarcasm in there too. Be strong on Shrek 3.
