Explain Yourself & Your Music Vol. 3 . . .

Posted by 2 Dollar Productions Thursday, May 17, 2007

{This is the third in an occasional series documenting some of the horrendous CD choices that I've made over the years with attempts to put into context/explain the rationale behind such purchases.}

I have nearly 500 CDs, which is by no means massive, and although I've weeded my collection down over the years by selling discs to used music shops and passed others away to friends, there still lurks many albums that have survived for various reasons - little of which involves actual musical talent.

Artist: Sophie B. Hawkins
Album: Whaler
Times Played Since 2000: 0

This is one of those albums that I have no recollection of buying or receiving, and I know for a fact that I didn't steal it from somebody, yet it remains in my CD collection to this day.

It's a complete mystery as I have no other Sophie B. Hawkins albums nor do I recall much about the artist herself except that I think she has a decent voice and was fairly good-looking.

{Editor's Note: My memory regarding her looks is very hazy as well and I have no idea how closely this matches up to Hawkins or if it's even her}

I do remember that one song, "As I Lay Me Down," from the album as it was fairly popular as a soft-spoken lullaby-like tune back in the 90s. But that track doesn't seem like nearly enough to justify spending money on the album, a purchase which obviously transpired at some stage during the past two decades.

Work will have to be put on hold today until I figure this out, and once I do solve the mystery, it's onto tackling the Bermuda Triangle and the force that loses my socks in the dryer.

  2. The only decent song she had was that one,"Damn! I Wish I was Your Lover" You can pretty much toss the rest away...

  4. I'm with JLee, infact that's the only song I even remember her singing. Quick question....is this particular CD still going to remain in your 500 + collection? *snicker*

  6. I have no knowledge of this person, but when you DO figure out where the socks are, could you take a look for the Loch Ness Monster?

  8. I've never even heard of this singer but I'm right there with you putting work on hold till we're all satisfied with figuring it out!! Ha!!

  9. Jlee - That's right - I knew she had another song, but that's not even on this album.

    Miss Ash - That is a good question, and until I get to the bottom of this mystery - yes. Laugh all you want. Ha.

    Anonymous Boxer - First the CD, then the socks & once I've got some momentum & travel budget, off to find the monster.

    Nobich - I'm sure my company execs would disagree, but some things ARE too important to wait.

  11. "Damn I wish I was your lover"- ugh....All I remember was that song was played on every 90210 like show whenever someone was breaking up/wanted to break up/ wanted to fuck the person being broken up with..or at the closing credits....so ALL the time. hated that song.

    my lamest CD buy would have to be....can't believe I am admiting this....that new Justin Timberlake CD. Actually was going through some midlife crisis and loved that Sexyback song. Good beat...but the rest is like....Justin Timberlake. Okay, you can stop laughing at me now.

  13. It's a documented fact (somewhere) that socks disappear to perpetuate the global market by having the need to replace said socks. It sounds good anyway, right? : )

  14. Vivavoom - I forgot that song in the 90210 soundtrack (and I even own the first season on DVD). But with JT, you're in the majority there as that was purchased by many people, so you're still ahead of the game.

    Symplyamused - That's a good theory. I'm not sure if it would hold up for true economists, but . . . it works for me.
