Give Me Breakfast, Hold The Crowds . . .

I hold a special reverance for breakfast in my daily regime.

Lunch generally leaves me ambivalent, dinner can be excellent, however, a good weekend breakfast never lets me down and starts my day off with a perfect dose of grease and caffeine.

A standard menu would include: A 3-egg omlette with ham, onions, green peppers and cheddar cheese, hash browns, turkey bacon, whole wheat toast, a side of sausage, a bowl of fruit, a glass of milk, 3 glasses of water, 2 newspapers, a pot of coffee and a slice of pie for dessert, with a strong preference for Key Lime or Apple.



Unfortunately, every breakfast joint in Austin is slammed to the wall with people every single weekend. Even the chains - your IHOPs and Denny's - have lines spilling out the door and waiting for an hour to eat my breakfast is not condusive to my enjoyment of the ceremony.

I need peace and quiet and strong coffee and standing in lines and crowded waiting areas gets on my nerves as the alcohol sweat from the night before starts to build.

You could obviously avoid the crowds by getting up very early, but that really defeats the entire purpose of the leisurely breakfast.

I think the only way around this dilema will be to start making myself known at an establishment close to my loft, a place where my breakfast needs can be met and where I can begin handing out tips to the staff so that I have a table waiting for me regardless of the crowds.

This would be ideal. I've always wanted to walk into a restaraunt and have the hostess part the throngs of people like the Red Sea while whispering discreetly in my ear "Right this way Mr. S, your table is waiting."

Dare to dream.

  2. I feel you on this one. Weekend mornings are a mad rush of people, all having the same idea. I have the "good window" to show up down to a science though, but it does require a slightly earlier start. Maybe you should sleep until 1 or so, then everyone would be moving on to lunch?

    Pie after breakfast? unusual

  4. I rarely go out for weekend breakfast, however when I do it's fabulous and so worth the wait. We found this great place in TO that has crazy lineups but the best, and i mean the best dill potato salad, egg and cheese sandwiches on foccocia bread. It's very posh :P

  6. There is also the 99 cent breaky at the Saucer....it's well...shaped like a flying saucer, super cheap and damn good. Just don't look at the cook haha.

     
  7. Jlee - Do share the timing issue & pie is excellent with breakfast. There must be coffee, but . . .

    Miss Ash - Sounds very posh or very not. Ha. Not too much in between there, and I rarely spy the cook when I'm eating somewhere so I think I would be in the clear. Cheap & greasy can sometimes do the trick.

  10. That's the best idea I've heard all day & I'll run it up the flagpole later on. The only problem is that there's too much food to eat comfortably in bed. Details.

  12. what kind of turkey bacon do you eat? I think that stuff tastes like cardboard. Blech.
    Although I've only bought Oscar Meyer (i think) it's reduced calories is a plus, but I'd rather have canadian bacon instead.

    But I agree on a nice greasy breakfast on weekends. Which is why i LOVE this article...

     
  13. I love to do the same thing. We have a great breakfast spot in town called the Old European. Fabulous food and great coffee. However, if you don't want to wait in long lines you either wait until summer when most of the students are gone, go on a weekday, or go early/after 11. Since they now serve lunch and their food no matter what is excellent you can't go wrong. Those lines are the price you pay, however our Denny's is always easy to get into for breakfast, cause everyone else is at the Old European.

     
  14. Locomocos - I've been eating Jenny O lately, which is OK. They are all a bit dry and not as good regular, but you're right about Canadian Bacon - I just always forget about it. And your links are always spot-on as well. Thanks.

    Sarcastic - I like the name, the Old European. I would eat breakfast there all the time, regardless of the wait. A choice between the Old European and Denny's is really no choice at all. Right?

  22. I had that experience at a restaurant once. My ex-wife and I and a couple friends used to go to a local Irish-Mexican place (Carlos Murphy's) every Saturday night and split a chicken nachos and get some deserts (not a lot of money). After about 2-3 months of regular visits, they would always slide us in despite the normal wait time.

    It was very cool. Too bad they closed down.
